73 years later, on September 1, 1985, a joint American-French expedition, headed by famous American oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard, discovered the Titanic over two miles below the ocean’s surface.

What’s more tragic is that, of the roughly 1,500 people who were killed in the disaster, about 1,160 bodies remain lost.

Titanic has been sitting 3800m below the surface of the North Atlantic Ocean since 1912, being corroded by iron-eating bacteria.

Among the survivors were the four officers of the Titanic: Harold Lowe, Charles Lightoller, Joseph Boxhall and Herbert J. Pitman.

The last living survivor of the Titanic was, Millvina Dean, who passed away at the age of 97 in Southampton after catching pneumonia in 2009. She was just a  two-month-old baby at that time, and was the youngest passenger on board.
