History and Formation

These Caves of Chile are also known as Cuevas de Marmol and are located in the Andes Mountain region, near the village of Puerto Rio Tranquilo on the western shores of General Carrera Lake in Patagonia, southern Chile in South America. The caves are up to 94 meters deep.

These caves were first documented by the Italian-Argentinian explorer Clemente Onelli in his book “Climbing the Andes” and relates to the discovery of the caves in a survey down in 1896 and 1897.
 
These caves are made of marble. The caves started off as sedimentary rock which later on transformed into marble rock. The transformation was due to tectonic activity and metamorphism, undergoing a continuous change in mineral composition when exposed to high temperature and pressure.

The unique colors and shapes of the Marble Caves are the result of millions of years of erosion and deterioration of the rocks initiated by Lake General Carrera’s water splashing up the rocks making them smooth. These are the factors that helped the formation of the caves, tunnels, pillars, and huge columns of these beautiful Caves. Adding to its beauty is the reflection of the Lake’s sparkling blue water. The intensity and hue of the caves magnificent blue color changes. The color depends on the water levels and time of the year or season.
